NOVELL ENHANCES NETWARE SUPPORT FOR DOS/WINDOWS CUSTOMERS
Significantly Increases Network Performance with Burst Mode Technology
PROVO, Utah -- April 21, 1992 -- Novell today began offering an updated
NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows through an easy-to-use 800 number,
800 UPDATE1. The kit simplifies the use of NetWare for customers using DOS
and Microsoft Windows 3.1 and 3.0. Customers also receive new Burst Mode
technology which greatly improves performance over local- and wide-area
networks.
The workstation software kit contains a new NetWare Windows driver set for
Windows 3.1 and 3.0, as well as advanced versions of the NetWare client
shell and SPX/IPX drivers. The kit also contains a set of NetWare
workstation utilities called NetWare Tools. Made available through a
graphical user interface, NetWare Tools allow users to easily perform a
variety of network functions without having to go to the DOS prompt.
"Our work with Microsoft to meet customer needs for better integration of
Windows within network environments has led to this enhanced client shell
software," said John Edwards, executive vice president for the Desktop
Systems Group. "In addition, the Burst Mode capabilities within this
package make available to the NetWare installed base new protocol
technology that increases network data transmission speeds by up to 300
percent."
The Burst Mode technology, which includes a Burst Mode shell and NetWare
loadable module, speeds the transmission of large amounts of data by
allowing a workstation or server to send up to 64 kilobytes of data to the
requester without needing a response as previously required.
"After Burst Mode, users experienced an average performance increase of 50
percent, with some users increasing their performance by 150 percent,"
says Jim Shipp, network engineer at WordPerfect Corporation, a beta site
for NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows. "As a result of this
increased performance, the productivity of users has been greatly
enhanced."
The NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows is available now in the U.S
and Canada for U.S. $30 by calling (800) UPDATE1. Customers outside the
U.S. and Canada should contact their local Novell Reseller for pricing and
availability.
