  1. NOVELL ENHANCES NETWARE SUPPORT FOR DOS/WINDOWS CUSTOMERS

  3. Significantly Increases Network Performance with Burst Mode Technology

  5. PROVO, Utah -- April 21, 1992 -- Novell today began offering an updated
  6. NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows through an easy-to-use 800 number,
  7. 800 UPDATE1. The kit simplifies the use of NetWare for customers using DOS
  8. and Microsoft Windows 3.1 and 3.0.  Customers also receive new Burst Mode
  9. technology which greatly improves performance over local- and wide-area
  10. networks.

  12. The workstation software kit contains a new NetWare Windows driver set for
  13. Windows 3.1 and 3.0, as well as advanced versions of the NetWare client
  14. shell and SPX/IPX drivers.  The kit also contains a set of NetWare
  15. workstation utilities called NetWare Tools.  Made available through a
  16. graphical user interface, NetWare Tools allow users to easily perform a
  17. variety of network functions without having to go to the DOS prompt.

  19. "Our work with Microsoft to meet customer needs for better integration of
  20. Windows within network environments has led to this enhanced client shell
  21. software," said John Edwards, executive vice president for the Desktop
  22. Systems Group.  "In addition, the Burst Mode capabilities within this
  23. package make available to the NetWare installed base new protocol
  24. technology that increases network data transmission speeds by up to 300
  25. percent."

  27. The Burst Mode technology, which includes a Burst Mode shell and NetWare
  28. loadable module, speeds the transmission of large amounts of data by
  29. allowing a workstation or server to send up to 64 kilobytes of data to the
  30. requester without needing a response as previously required.

  32. "After Burst Mode, users experienced an average performance increase of 50
  33. percent, with some users increasing their performance by 150 percent,"
  34. says Jim Shipp, network engineer at WordPerfect Corporation, a beta site
  35. for NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows.  "As a result of this
  36. increased performance, the productivity of users has been greatly
  37. enhanced."

  39. The NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS/Windows is available now in the U.S
  40. and Canada for U.S. $30 by calling (800) UPDATE1.  Customers outside the
